New Tools to Strengthen Student Account Security

As cyber threats evolve, fraud prevention remains a shared responsibility across the California Community Colleges. Recent updates to CCCApply and OpenCCC are strengthening protections for student accounts while improving processes that support authentic users.

These safeguards reduce fraudulent activity, prevent unauthorized access, and protect sensitive student information. As these efforts mature, colleges may notice changes in how students experience account creation and recovery.

What campuses may see

Improved fraud detection can sometimes result in a student being blocked by duplicate-account prevention logic, even if they believe they have not previously created an account. As large-scale data breaches make it easier for bad actors to misuse real identities, these safeguards are critical but may occasionally create temporary delays for authentic students.

During peak enrollment periods, both the CCC Technology Center and campus help desks have seen an increase in requests related to account recovery and identity verification.

To improve the experience, the Technology Center has introduced a secure, self-service account recovery option using the DMV Wallet app with a mobile driver’s license. With this feature, students can use DMV identity verification to regain access immediately—without contacting support.

By connecting a verified government ID in the DMV Wallet app, students can restore account access and complete identity verification in one step. This reduces application delays, lowers support workload, and helps streamline onboarding and other processes that require ID verification. The DMV Wallet option also supports California residents with AB 60 CA driver’s licenses. Once verified, this status remains valid for up to one year.

Each successful verification also generates a notification to the college via the SuperGlue Events staging table, providing a trusted data point to support local helpdesk interactions. In addition, colleges can opt to receive automated reports of recently verified students by submitting a request to the Technology Center at staffsupportccctc@openccc.zendesk.com.

How colleges can support students

Colleges play an important role in helping students navigate these protections. Campuses can:

Additional guidance for students

After account recovery, students should review their OpenCCC account information and the applications they submitted. If they notice unfamiliar details, they should contact the associated colleges and consider requesting a free credit report from Experian, TransUnion, or Equifax.

Supporting secure student access

Staff can further reduce risk by reviewing their college’s student account retention policies, including:

  • Account recovery workflows for college student accounts
  • Identity-proofing requirements for local ID verification
  • Timelines for inactive student accounts
    • Are these deactivated in a timely manner to protect against account takeovers?

Coordination across IT, Admissions and Records, and Financial Aid helps ensure processes remain aligned, secure, and responsive to evolving threats.
