Making Learning Accessible: Tools for Students, Faculty, and Staff

Ensuring every student has equal access to learning is central to the California Community Colleges’ commitment to equity and inclusion. The CCC Accessibility Center is helping colleges meet this goal with self-paced courses that equip faculty and staff with the knowledge and tools to support students of all abilities.

Courses such as Reactive Accessibility: Effective Communication When Barriers Arise and Alternate Media: Ensuring Timeliness guide colleges in addressing accessibility challenges. Faculty and staff learn how to create inclusive materials, respond effectively when barriers arise, and ensure students have the resources they need to succeed.

Hosted in the @ONE Canvas Catalog at no cost to California community college employees, these self-paced modules cover a wide range of topics—from PDF Accessibility and Social Media Accessibility to Braille Fundamentals and Journey Mapping. This flexible format allows colleges to integrate professional development into busy schedules while providing staff quick-reference tools they can apply immediately.

Beyond professional growth, the courses help colleges stay compliant with federal accessibility requirements, including Section 508 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). They provide practical strategies for creating inclusive learning environments, ensuring that students, faculty, and staff have the tools they need to thrive.

Through initiatives like these, the CCC Accessibility Center—part of the CCC Technology Center—is fostering a systemwide culture of accessibility and inclusion. By making training more accessible and actionable, colleges can remove barriers, foster student success, and maintain compliance—all while advancing the California Community Colleges system’s broader Vision 2030 goals.
