With approximately 1,000 attendees – including nearly 400 first-time attendees – the 2019 Online Teaching Conference (OTC) took place June 17-19 at the Hilton Anaheim and was the largest OTC to date.

Held every June, the annual conference provides individuals interested in online education the opportunity to share their knowledge and experiences, strengthening their ability to prepare and support students pursuing their educational goals. The 2019 conference offered over 70 engaging sessions covering topics such as “Technology Innovation,” “Equity,” “Effective Practices,” “Leadership and Administration,” and “Support and Resources.”

2019 daily conference highlights

Monday, June 17: The OTC offered optional half and full day pre-conferences focusing on topics such as effective course design, accessibility, Canvas, video creation and hosting, and more. The afternoon keynote session featured a panel of current students discussing what is needed from online course instructors alongside Patricia James, Manager, Educational Outreach, American Public University System, and Kevin Kelly, Ed.D., a lecturer at San Francisco State University and distance education consultant.

Tuesday, June 18: Keynote speaker Flower Darby, a senior instructional designer and adjunct faculty member at Northern Arizona University and Estrella Mountain Community College, discussed the importance of re-invigorating online teaching, motivated by the highest ideal: educating our citizenry toward a brighter future for all.

Wednesday, June 19: Heather Hiles, President and CEO of Calbright College, participated in a fireside chat about building a new kind of community college focused on connecting California’s stranded workers to 21st century careers. Hiles answered audience questions about the 115th California community college and offered additional insight into its unique purpose, design and October 2019 launch.
