Last year, California Virtual Campus-Online Education Initiative (CVC-OEI) awarded $27.5 million in grants to 70 California community colleges to improve online Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways. Its Improving Online CTE Pathways (IOP) program helps grantee colleges develop online courses and programs that lead to short-term, industry-valued credentials, certificates or programs, and enable Calbright College students to continue their education in pathways at other community colleges.

During the past eight months, CVC-OEI has made 130 new or improved online courses available to students. The grantee colleges and districts recently submitted their FY2019 second-quarter reports, and other key takeaways include:

  • Twenty-one projects are improving existing credentials, online certificates and programs
  • Thirty-nine projects are building new credentials, online certificates and programs
  • Ten colleges are focusing their efforts on supporting online success for students and faculty

When the grant period concludes in June 2020, approximately 99,000 students will have the opportunity to more easily and more quickly earn credentials, certificates or degrees during the 2020–21 academic year through:

  • Improvement of 191 existing CTE programs and pathways
  • Creation of 216 new online CTE programs and pathways
  • Development of 792 online courses (including either new courses or existing courses that have been converted to an online format)

CVC-OEI is currently working with the grantee colleges on promotional videos that highlight some of the courses and programs created as a result of the funding. Additionally, this June CVC-OEI will participate in a poster session featuring presentations from the 70 grantees at the 2020 Online Teaching Conference.

CVC-OEI is a comprehensive and collaborative program that leverages effective practices and technology to significantly increase students’ opportunities for higher education degree attainment in California. Review the IOP grantees’ work now on the CVC-OEI website.
