Building the Foundation for Seamless Credit Transfer through Smarter Curriculum Management

Behind every streamlined student transfer is a network of carefully aligned systems working quietly in the background. Two of these systems — the Chancellor’s Office Curriculum Inventory (COCI) and Course Identification (C-ID) — are foundational tools developed and supported by the California Community Colleges Technology Center to simplify how courses are approved, numbered, and recognized across California’s community colleges.

Together, these services form the backbone of curriculum management for the California Community Colleges, enabling campuses to efficiently manage curriculum changes, support the Common Course Numbering (CCN) initiative, and ensure students can transfer credit smoothly between colleges and to four-year universities.

Structured Data Submissions Replacing PDFs in COCI

Recent COCI updates were made at the request of the CCC Chancellor’s Office (CCCCO) to move away from PDF uploads and into structured data submissions.

A Foundation for Efficiency and Equity

By automating approval processes and creating shared standards for course data, COCI and C-ID serve as foundational technology for a more efficient, equitable curriculum system. These efforts are helping California’s community colleges meet legislative goals around CCN — and, ultimately, helping students navigate clearer, faster transfer pathways statewide.
